The Impact of COVID-19 on the Hospitality Industry:  Part 1, Food PrepThese have been extraordinary times with the advent of the Coronavirus pandemic and quarantines worldwide. We have seen many hospitality related industries suffer financial losses with the quarantine process requiring their premises to be closed to the public. This has led to mass layoffs and unfortunately some businesses have closed down.

In difficult times, innovation is the key to survival. Many businesses have adapted their models to ensure their survival. This coupled with government business loans and subsidies have helped many in the industry maintain their livelihoods. Restaurants are now dependent on the curbside pickup, take-out and food delivery models to continue to service their customers. These adaptations will probably remain in effect for the foreseeable future until government quarantine regulations are lifted or eased.

The hope is for the curve to flatten enough for restaurants and food service establishments to open to full service once again. Some projected models include increased patio seating and reduced indoor seating. Many jurisdictions are currently working on what the new normal will be to ensure safe reopening of restaurants and hospitality venues. The light is there at the end of the tunnel and as we see more and more public spaces opening, we look forward to the reopening of many restaurants and hospitality venues in the coming weeks and months.
